The Northeastern region borders New Hampshire to the north, Boston to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the East. Proximity to Greater Boston and New Hampshire gives industries in this region the advantage of being close to extensive markets, suppliers, and research facilities.

The region's largest business centers, Lowell and Lawrence, are located only 25 miles from downtown Boston's financial district. The Merrimack River, birthplace to the country's Industrial Revolution, has served as an important industrial river and continues to be a valuable resource for the region.

The historic North Shore region includes several of Massachusetts' oldest port communities including Salem, Gloucester, and Newburyport and is a center for the fishing and tourism industries.
